Everyone is curious to know the lifestyle of cadets at the National Defense Academy. After all, it's not a random degree. You are learning the defense mechanism of the country, dealing with weapons and other complicated operations. It's indeed a tough row to hoe.
Making a soldier is difficult for both the trainer officers and the NDA cadets. Both have to give their more than 100% to achieve the results. It's like the tiers of the bicycle. If one gets punctured, it won't move ahead. How academics of NDA cadets are is our topic today? Let's hop on.
Academic is a vital part of NDA. For this purpose, they have built different buildings for arts, science, and training related to the service. The academic year at NDA is into two terms - spring (January to May) and autumn (July to December). These classes start after the parade session and breakfast. It runs from 9 am to 1 pm.
There has been a lot of change in the academic curriculum of NDA. Now the cadets get both science and arts degrees after graduating from NDA (BSc, B-tech, and B.A). They also get a chance to learn various foreign languages in NDA, Arabic being one of the favorites. Chinese, French, and other languages are also on the list. Foreign languages are crucial because nowadays we communicate and train with other country's military.
Making a soldier isn't possible in the classroom. You cannot learn everything under a roof. Most of the training of NA cadets takes place in the field. They train even in the most extreme temperature. The instructor gives them knowledge regarding wars and training related to them. All these techniques and strategies are utilized in practical classes.
Most people have a misconception regarding the academics of NDA cadets. They believe, as a soldier, only physical strength and health is crucial. But we to lead the people, and for that, we need to have deep knowledge of academics of cadets at NDA.
There are many military tactics like using weapons, fighting wars, etc. All of these things require theoretical as well as practical knowledge. Similar to other colleges, NDA conducts exams at regular intervals.
Military forces have started a new theory, which is called Scholar Warrior. It means you should be a warrior as well as a scholar. So it's like refining every mushroom.
Cadets at NDA study compulsory and a foundation course for the first four semesters. They get to choose their service subject in the fifth semester.
In the fifth and sixth terms, NDA cadets study their service subjects. For example, Air Force cadets will study aerodynamics, meteorology, avionics, and navigation.
Other than BSc, NDA cadets learn about military foundation courses. NDA cadets become proficient in service writing, military manners, communication manners, table etiquette, etc.
Apart from academics, cadets receive training in various outdoor activities such as drill, PT, sports, and games. There is also a games period where they play games, like- football, hockey, and basketball.
On joining the academy, cadets get allotted to different squadrons. There are various competitions amongst them. The cadets also learn some techniques like map reading, weapon handling, military law, history, and organization of each service.
The name of the force that drives NDA is an inspiration. Cadets can pass the challenging tests in a class by getting inspiration from their peers and seniors. They all study and train together to become responsible soldiers.
The seniors take complete responsibility for teaching their juniors everything and preparing them in every way. They maintain the spirit of the squadron by boosting their confidence.
The process of making a soldier is incomplete without physical training. The NDA cadets get a warm welcome from the Joint training team (JTT). The training starts with cadets going through Orientation Capsule for two months. Here they built their physical as well mental strength for the worst possibilities.
The outdoor training takes place in the hilly area and dense green terrain around the NDA campus. The training includes both theoretical and practical training.
Do you remember farewell during school? A function hosted by the juniors to bid goodbye to the seniors. The same concept is in NDA.
They have an event called Passing out Parade. It is the most breathtaking among the end-of-term events at the NDA. It is also the culminating event of another successful term. The unique parade held at the Khetarpal Parade Ground includes over one thousand participating cadets bidding farewells to the senior colleagues going to their respective service boards. It's the emotional scene and makes it even more beautiful and eye-catching.
Both training and academics require the hard work and dedication of NDA cadets. The cadets give their best to pursue their dreams, and that's what NDA demands- Hard-work and commitment.
Q1- Are cameras allowed during NDA training?
A1- The NDA authorities allowed photography during the Passing Out Parade (POP) and other special events. In other cases, if anyone wishes to take photography, they must seek permission from the authorities.
Q2- What all is there in academics of NDA?
A2- There is no limitation to the academic of NDA cadets. They study science, arts, military foundation courses, general knowledge, economics, foreign languages, etc. Weapon handling, map reading, and other wars strategies are also part of cadets' academics in NDA. Till the fifth semester, everybody goes through the same training and education. From the sixth semester, NDA cadets study their chosen service.
